Bonding with your baby during pregnancy

unnamed.pngThe process of ‘bonding’ means forming an emotional connection between yourself and your baby. This process of bonding starts before your baby is born, while they are still in the womb. This bond, also known as ‘attachment’, helps your baby’s brain to grow particularly the part of their brain that is important for communicating and forming relationships with others. Your baby feels safe, secure, and loved and so learns to love others.

Your baby will be sensitive to their surroundings and to your mood and feelings. Therefore, it is important that you take some time out each day to respond to your baby, as this will have a positive impact on their emotional well-being.

We’ve included some ideas below that may help you and your baby connect with one another during pregnancy:

  • talk, sing and read to your baby (this will help them to get to know your voice and feel safe and secure when they are born)
  • play music to your baby (lullabies can help to relax you and your baby)
  • gently touch and stroke your bump
  • respond to your baby’s kicks
  • try to find time to relax (this will help your baby to relax too)
